American Standard Home Additions & ADU: The Palo Alto Owner’s Guide

We install American Standard-compatible fixtures and systems in home additions and ADUs across Palo Alto, with most projects falling between $45,000 and $130,000 for additions and $90,000 to $220,000 for detached ADUs. Our crews stock the full American Standard catalog, including Cadet, Champion, and Studio series bath fixtures, plus compatible rough-in valves and drainage assemblies. Most Palo Alto homeowners discover their addition’s plumbing or HVAC integration needs attention when the new space fails to maintain temperature parity with the main house, or when a bathroom fixture installed during a 1980s second-story addition starts leaking through the original subfloor.

Which American Standard Models This Applies To

American Standard doesn’t manufacture structural addition components, they manufacture the fixtures, valves, and finishing systems that make an addition livable. In Palo Alto, we most often match American Standard Cadet Pro and Champion 4 toilets for ground-floor additions where the rough-in sits at the standard 12-inch center from the finished wall. The Studio S series shows up frequently in ADU bathrooms where homeowners want a wall-hung carrier system to save floor space.

Identifying your exact model matters for rough-in compatibility. The Cadet 3 uses a 3-inch flush valve; the Champion 4 uses a 4-inch accelerator valve, and the tank-to-bowl gasket pattern differs. Check the underside of the tank lid for the stamped model number, or measure the rough-in from the wall to the center of the closet bolts. For wall-hung carriers like the Studio S, the in-wall frame depth varies by series, and retrofitting a different brand carrier into an existing American Standard frame usually requires opening the wall.

We source OEM American Standard parts through our regular supplier, but we’ve also vetted aftermarket equivalents from Fluidmaster and Korky for common wear items like fill valves and flappers. The aftermarket saves $15-$40 on a flapper; the OEM part buys exact rubber compound matching for hard Palo Alto water, which runs about 18 grains per gallon and degrades generic flappers faster.

Signs Your American Standard Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

Signs Your American Standard Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
  • Running toilet in the addition bathroom, but not the main house. The fill valve diaphragm cracks first in spaces with wider temperature swings. Additions and ADUs in Palo Alto often sit unconditioned longer than the main house, and the American Standard 400A fill valve’s silicone seal hardens faster with thermal cycling.
  • Weak flush that requires a second handle press. The Champion 4’s flush tower seal warps when chlorine levels spike, which happens more in ADUs where water sits stagnant in the supply line between weekend guest visits. The 3-inch or 4-inch seal loses its flat profile and leaks tank water into the bowl slowly.
  • Water stains on the ceiling below the addition bathroom. The tank-to-bowl gasket on older Cadet models compresses permanently after 8-12 years. In Palo Alto’s dry summers, the rubber shrinks slightly, then swells again in winter, accelerating the leak path.
  • Wall-hung toilet rocks or the flush plate sticks. The Studio S carrier frame uses a threaded rod adjustment for bowl height. If the original installer didn’t lock the nuts with thread sealant, vibration loosens them. The in-wall carrier is structural; a loose bowl stresses the frame welds.
  • Grinding or whistling from the fill valve on refill. Sediment from Palo Alto’s Hetch Hetchy supply accumulates in the 400A valve’s inlet screen. The valve then chatters as it hunts for the correct shut-off pressure, and the noise carries through addition walls with thinner insulation than the main house.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Palo Alto What’s Included
American Standard toilet replacement (addition/ADU) $800-$2,200 OEM fixture, new wax ring, stainless bolts, haul-away, 1-year labor warranty
Fill valve / flapper replacement only $180-$340 Part, test for leaks, adjust fill height, documented photo record
Wall-hung carrier frame service $450-$1,200 Access panel cut, frame inspection, rod adjustment or replacement, wall repair
Full addition bathroom rough-in to finish $9,000-$28,000 Demolition, plumbing rough, fixtures, tile, permit, inspection coordination
Detached ADU construction (complete) $90,000-$220,000 Design, permits, foundation to finish, utility tie-ins, final inspection

The range reflects three variables: fixture tier (Champion 4 retails higher than Cadet Pro), access difficulty (crawl space plumbing in Old Palo Alto additions versus slab-on-grade in Barron Park ADUs), and whether we’re matching existing trim finish. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the written price covers the full scope before anyone picks up a tool. No change proceeds without a signed change order, which is why our 4,000-plus projects have finished within a few percent of the agreed number.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely check three things before calling: confirm the water shut-off valve turns freely (the oval handle under the tank), verify the supply line isn’t kinked, and listen for where the sound originates during the flush cycle. These checks cost nothing and occasionally reveal a $12 fix.

Where DIY goes wrong: the wall-hung carrier frame supports 500-plus pounds and connects to a cast iron or PVC waste stack behind drywall. Adjusting carrier rods without knowing the torque spec strips the threads or cracks the frame weld. The Champion 4’s 4-inch flush valve requires a specific tank-to-bowl gasket; the Cadet gasket looks identical but leaks immediately under the higher flush volume. And any work on the waste line in Palo Alto requires a plumbing permit for alteration, not just replacement.

We’re not affiliated with American Standard. We’re an independent contractor that stocks their catalog because Palo Alto homeowners request it, and because the parts availability lets us quote honest numbers rather than inflated ones.
