GAF Driveway & Pavers: The Palo Alto Owner’s Guide

GAF driveway and paver systems in Palo Alto typically run $7,000-$18,000 for a full paver driveway installation, and we stock GAF-compatible replacement sections and edge restraints for same-day repair on most common series. Most homeowners in Palo Alto discover a problem when they notice shifting pavers along the driveway apron or pooling water where the permeable base has compacted unevenly, usually after the first heavy winter rain or a dry summer that causes soil contraction around the Barron Park and Old Palo Alto neighborhoods.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF’s hardscape line includes the permeable paver systems sold under the GAF Porous Pave and GAF DriWay series, plus the earlier GAF EuroStone and GAF TerraPave lines that were common on Peninsula installations from 2012 to 2019. The part you need depends on whether your driveway uses the interlocking concrete paver system with the 80mm thickness spec or the thinner 60mm residential grade, and whether your edge restraint is the aluminum L-channel version or the recycled plastic SnapEdge system that GAF phased out after 2017.

To identify your series, check the spacer tabs cast into the paver edge: GAF’s newer DriWay pavers have a double-notch pattern, while EuroStone used a single rectangular lug. If you’re matching replacement pavers, the color batch matters more than the model name. GAF’s “Sierra Blend” and “Coastal Fog” colorways varied by production run, and a 2024 replacement paver won’t match a 2016 installation even with the same color name. We source from GAF’s current distribution through their San Jose warehouse, but we also stock compatible aftermarket pavers from Belgard and Techo-Bloc when color matching is more important than OEM branding. Rowan Construction Group Palo Alto is an independent service provider, not affiliated with GAF.

Signs Your GAF Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your GAF Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Pavers rocking or tipping underfoot. This usually means the bedding sand layer has washed out or the base aggregate wasn’t compacted to the 98% Proctor density spec when installed. In Palo Alto’s clay-heavy soils, especially near the foothills below Page Mill Road, seasonal expansion and contraction breaks down the sand bedding faster than in sandy-loam areas.
  • Standing water more than 30 minutes after rain. GAF permeable systems rely on a 4-inch open-graded stone base that clogs with sediment over time. If your driveway was installed without the recommended geotextile separation fabric between the base and the native soil, fines migrate upward and the system loses its drain rate.
  • Edge pavers migrating outward or sinking along the curb line. The plastic or aluminum edge restraint has likely cracked or pulled its spikes. This is the most common GAF-specific failure we see, because the SnapEdge plastic becomes brittle after 6-8 years of UV exposure in Palo Alto’s high-sun climate.
  • Weeds growing through the joints despite polymeric sand. The polymeric sand bond has failed, either from improper activation during installation (too little water, applied in direct sun) or from degradation of the acrylic binder. Once the seal breaks, seeds wash into the voids and root in the bedding layer.
  • Chipped or spalled paver surfaces. GAF’s 60mm residential-grade pavers don’t hold up to vehicle overloading or snow-melt chemical exposure. If you see surface flaking, the paver body has absorbed moisture and undergone freeze-thaw damage, which is rare in Palo Alto but common if the driveway was sourced from a batch with high porosity.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For GAF driveway and paver repair in Palo Alto, partial replacement of a failing section typically runs $2,500-$6,500 depending on how many square feet need lifting and how far the base damage extends. A full driveway replacement with GAF-compatible or upgraded pavers lands in our standard $7,000-$18,000 range, with most mid-size two-car driveways in the Old Palo Alto and Professorville areas settling around $11,000-$14,000.

Our written quote breaks out demolition and disposal, base regrading and compaction, bedding sand, pavers by the square foot, edge restraint, polymeric sand jointing, and sealant application if specified. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that price is fixed before we start; no change proceeds without a signed change order. Every repair carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and you’ll receive a documented photo record of the base condition before we cover it.

An owner can safely check whether pavers are loose by hand and whether water drains within a reasonable window. You can also clear surface debris from joints with a stiff broom. What you shouldn’t attempt: lifting multiple pavers to inspect the base, because without proper compaction equipment you’ll replace the problem with a worse settlement pattern six months later. The plate compactor rental won’t achieve the density spec, and hand-tamping leaves soft spots that telegraph through in the first rainy season.

Edge restraint replacement looks simple but requires a concrete saw or angle grinder to cut the old spikes flush, and the new restraint must be set with long enough spikes to hit undisturbed soil beyond the failed zone. We’ve fixed enough DIY edge jobs in Palo Alto where the homeowner used landscape spikes instead of the 10-inch structural spikes the spec requires. Measure twice, write it down, then we talk.
