CGI Fence Installation: The Palo Alto Owner’s Guide

CGI fence installation in Palo Alto typically runs $3,500-$9,000 for a complete residential system, with most standard lots falling in the $4,500-$6,500 range depending on linear footage and terrain. We stock CGI-compatible posts, rails, and infill panels for same-week installation across the Peninsula, and we carry the full line of hardware for the Estate, Signature, and Premier series. Most homeowners first notice a problem when a gate sags or a post leans after one of our winter storm cycles - the sandy loam in Old Palo Alto and the clay-heavy cuts near Foothill Expressway drain differently, and posts installed without proper gravel bedding or below the 24-inch frost line tend to shift within three to five years.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI, or Consolidated Glass Holdings, manufactures three residential fence series that share a common rail-and-picket attachment system but differ in wall thickness and hardware spacing. The Estate series uses 1.5-inch square aluminum posts with concealed brackets; the Signature series steps up to 2-inch posts with face-mounted cast-aluminum hardware; the Premier series, designed for estate-grade wind loads, uses 2.5-inch posts with internal reinforcement channels. The part number is stamped on the underside of the bottom rail - a four-digit code beginning with “E,” “S,” or “P” followed by the color code (BLK, BRZ, WHT, or SND). If the stamp is worn, measure the post wall thickness with a caliper: Estate reads 0.065 inch, Signature 0.080 inch, Premier 0.100 inch.

We install OEM CGI components and equivalent-grade aftermarket hardware from Specrail and Jerith when the lead time on CGI factory stock runs long - typically two weeks for custom colors, three days for black or bronze. The aftermarket brackets mate cleanly but use slightly different screw spacing; we note this on the written scope so there’s no confusion about what you’re getting. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the part origin is listed on every line item before work starts.

Signs Your CGI Fence Installation Is Failing

Signs Your CGI Fence Installation Is Failing
  • Gate sag or latch misalignment. The top rail-to-post connection loosens as the wood or composite gate frame expands and contracts through Palo Alto’s 40-degree annual temperature swing. The CGI hinge bracket uses a 3/8-inch bolt that wallows out the aluminum post hole if retightened repeatedly without a helicoil insert.
  • Post lean exceeding 2 inches at the top. The concrete footing has cracked or the post has rotted at grade - common in the lower-lying areas near San Francisquito Creek where the water table sits higher than the 24-inch burial depth. We pull these with a hydraulic post puller and reset with a gravel drain bed and sacrificial anode on steel posts.
  • Rail pop-out or visible gap between pickets and rails. The snap-in nylon clip degrades in UV; CGI’s clips are glass-filled nylon rated for 10 years but we’ve found they chalk and lose retention after six to seven years of direct south or west exposure in Palo Alto’s climate. The clip is a $3 part; the labor to remove and reinstall the rail is the cost driver.
  • Corrosion bloom at post base or hardware. Black anodized aluminum develops white oxidation where the finish is compromised - typically from string-trimmer damage or contact with decomposed granite mulch, which holds moisture against the metal. The post is structurally sound until the wall thickness drops below 0.040 inch; we measure with an ultrasonic gauge before recommending replacement.
  • Panel rattle or wind noise. The picket-to-rail friction fit loosens as the aluminum extrusion work-hardens from cyclic loading. Palo Alto’s afternoon westerlies through the gaps near Page Mill Road accelerate this. A rail replacement or picket retention clip upgrade solves it; damping tape is a temporary fix we don’t recommend.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Scope Price Range
Single post replacement (concrete footing included) $450-$850
Gate rebuild with new hinges, latch, and frame alignment $680-$1,400
Rail section replacement (up to 8 ft, one rail) $320-$580
Full panel replacement (posts, rails, pickets, hardware) $1,200-$2,400
Complete CGI fence installation, typical Palo Alto lot (150-200 linear ft) $3,500-$9,000

The range reflects three variables: access (narrow side yards in Professorville or the tree-root zones near Gamble Garden add labor), soil condition (clay requires a larger footing), and whether we’re matching existing color and series or installing new. Every quote is a flat price with a written scope, a written warranty, and a documented photo record of the existing condition - included, not optional. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers installation defects; manufacturer defects are handled through CGI’s 20-year limited warranty on aluminum components.

We do not charge for the estimate. Bring a competitor’s written quote and we’ll review it line by line at no charge - the Free Second Opinion is standing policy.

There’s no high-tension danger in fence work, but there are two places where DIY tends to cost more than it saves. Post setting looks simple until the hole is 30 inches deep in Palo Alto’s decomposed granite and the 80-pound bag of concrete sets before the post is plumb; we use a two-person auger and rapid-set mix with a 15-minute working time. Color matching is the other gotcha - CGI’s black is a matte anodized finish that reads differently in full sun than powder-coated equivalents from the hardware store. We’ve replaced more than a few homeowner “close enough” panels that looked right in the garage and jarring in the yard.

What you can safely check: the post number stamp, the bolt tightness on hinges (hand-tight plus a quarter turn, no more), and whether the post base is dry after rain. If it’s wet 48 hours after the last storm, the footing is compromised. Call (650) 446-9092 and we’ll schedule a free estimate - measure twice, write it down, then we talk.
