The model number is stamped on a metal label in the head jamb or on the edge of the operable sash; you’ll also find a manufacturing date code that matters because ES Windows revised its roller bearing design in 2017 and its locking cam geometry in 2019.

If your label reads ES-5000-V with a date before 2017, the original roller assembly used a 1-inch nylon wheel that ES no longer produces. The aftermarket equivalent from C.R. Laurence fits, but the axle diameter is 0.005 inches larger, which means it binds in about 15% of the original housings we’ve encountered. We stock both the OEM-spec replacement housing and the matched aftermarket wheel so we’re not making two trips. For ES-8000 impact units, the multi-point locking system uses a proprietary face-mounted gearbox that aftermarket suppliers have not successfully replicated; we source these factory-direct and keep the two most common handed configurations in our Palo Alto inventory.

Signs Your ES Windows Windows & Doors Is Failing

• Crank handle spins freely on casement or awning units. The operator gearbox has stripped its internal worm gear, usually from over-torquing after the hinges have sagged. The gearbox is replaceable independently, but if the hinges aren’t realigned, the new gearbox will fail within two seasons.
• Sliding door requires shoulder weight to move or chatters on the track. The tandem roller assembly has flat-spotted or the axle bearings have dried out. In Palo Alto’s dry summers, the factory lubricant evaporates faster than in coastal climates; we see this on south-facing doors after four to six years.
• Visible gap between sash and frame when the window is latched. The keepers have worn or the sash has dropped due to failed balance shoes in the jamb liner. On ES-5000 double-hungs, the balance system is a block-and-tackle type rated for 12,000 cycles; heavy use in a child’s bedroom often reaches that in five years.
• Condensation between panes that does not clear. The insulated glass unit seal has failed. ES Windows used a dual-seal system through 2018 and switched to a warm-edge spacer in 2019; the repair requires matching the spacer profile for aesthetic consistency.
• Lock lever lifts but does not engage or feels mushy. The multi-point locking rod has bent at a mortise point or the gearbox has cracked. On ES-8000 impact doors, the rod is a heavier-gauge steel that resists bending but concentrates stress at the gearbox; we’ve replaced more gearboxes than rods in this series.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely inspect an ES Windows unit for visible damage: check the label for the series and date code, operate the hardware slowly to locate the binding point, and look for cracked plastic or corrosion on metal components. What goes wrong in DIY is forcing a binding operator, which strips the gearbox beyond repair; removing a balance shoe without supporting the sash, which allows the spring to release into the jamb cavity; or attempting to reglaze an insulated glass unit, which voids any remaining warranty and rarely achieves a lasting seal.
