Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette’s residential lines break into three groups: the 940 vinyl series (double-hung and sliding), Classic Craft fiberglass entry systems, and the aluminum-clad wood Architect Series. The 940 uses a proprietary tilt-latch and balance shoe system that differs from Andersen or Pella by roughly 3/16″ in shoe width - enough that a generic replacement won’t seat properly in the jamb track. Classic Craft multipoint locks are manufactured by Hoppe for Barrette, but the faceplate screw spacing is unique to their 1-3/4″ door slab; standard Hoppe retrofit kits won’t align without slotting the mortise pocket.

To identify your part, check the etched code in the glass corner (format: BR-XXXX-XX) or the sticker on the door edge behind the strike plate. Signs Your Barrette Windows & Doors Is Failing

• Sash drops or won’t stay raised. The coil balance spring has lost tension or the shoe has cracked at the cam. In Palo Alto’s dry summers, the nylon shoe degrades faster than in humid climates - we replace this with a glass-reinforced composite that handles the thermal swing better.
• Draft at the sill or meeting rail. The bulb seal has compressed past recovery or the weatherstrip fin has torn at the corner. Barrette used two different fin designs in the 940; the 2012-and-later fin is taller and requires a different replacement part number.
• Multipoint lock won’t throw or retract fully. The gearbox has stripped or the rods have bowed from repeated slamming. On Classic Craft doors, the rods run through the full door height; if one point binds, the whole system stresses.
• Condensation between glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed, admitting moist air. This is not repairable - the IGU must be measured, ordered, and replaced as a sealed assembly.
• Door slab rubs at the header or sill. The hinge screws have worked loose in the composite frame, or the adjustable sill cap has settled. Barrette’s fiberglass doors don’t warp, but the frame can shift if the rough opening wasn’t shimmed to their spec.

A homeowner can check the etched glass code, photograph the failed part, and verify whether the window is under Barrette’s original warranty - that’s useful information either way. What goes wrong fast is forcing a balance shoe out of a loaded jamb track without releasing spring tension first; the coil stores roughly 15 pounds of force and can launch across a room. We don’t recommend removing a multipoint lock gearbox without supporting the door slab; the weight shifts onto the remaining hinges and the slab can split at the mortise.
