Which Barrette Models This Applies To

Barrette produces several paver and hardscape lines, and matching the right component matters more than most homeowners expect. The Barrette Architectural Series uses a 60mm thickness with chamfered edges, while their Standard Duty line runs 45mm and carries a different interlock profile. Check the paver edge for the stamped model code - usually on the spacer tab, not the face - or measure the joint width: Architectural calls for 3/16-inch sand joints, Standard for 1/8-inch. We’ve seen Palo Alto homeowners order the wrong thickness and end up with a lippage problem across the driveway that traps water.

Signs Your Barrette Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Pooling water after light rain. This usually means the bedding sand has washed out or the base has settled unevenly. In Palo Alto, where the clay content in older neighborhoods like Old Palo Alto holds moisture, freeze-thaw cycles aren’t the culprit - it’s the seasonal expansion and contraction of that clay substrate pushing the base out of plane.
• Individual pavers rocking under foot or tire. The paver has lost contact with the bedding layer beneath it, often because the joint sand has eroded and allowed edge loading to concentrate. Left alone, the paver cracks or the neighbors sink to match.
• Weeds growing through joints despite recent polymeric sand. The sand bed has degraded or was never fully compacted, creating voids where organic material collects. We’ve found this especially common on Barrette installations where the original contractor skipped the 1-inch bedding sand layer and laid directly on aggregate.
• Chipping or spalling on the paver surface. Barrette’s Standard Duty line uses a denser aggregate mix than Architectural, but both will degrade under de-icing salt or pressure washing at close range. Palo Alto’s mild winters mean salt damage is usually from over-application, not necessity.
• Sunken area near the garage or walkway edge. This is almost always inadequate edge restraint - the plastic or concrete border that locks the field in place. Barrette recommends a concrete haunch or heavy-duty plastic edging on all vehicular applications; we’ve replaced dozens where wood or thin aluminum was substituted.

If we’re pulling up Barrette pavers and find the original 4-inch aggregate base has turned to mud - common in Palo Alto’s lower-lying areas near the bay - we rebuild to 6 inches with proper drainage slope. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, that scope change gets a signed change order before the first load of base rock hits your driveway. No verbal agreements, no invoice surprises.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s honest work a homeowner can do: sweep fresh polymeric sand into open joints after a heavy rain season, or spot-seal the surface every two to three years with a quality penetrating sealer. These are maintenance tasks, not repairs.

Where DIY goes wrong is base reconstruction. Removing even a few Barrette pavers to address a sunken area exposes the bedding sand and aggregate below, and without plate compaction and proper slope verification, the repair fails within a season. We’ve been called to Palo Alto homes where the homeowner’s second attempt at leveling made the problem worse - the original 2% drainage slope got reversed, and water now runs toward the garage. The fix then requires pulling twice the area.
