The label also lists the nominal size, which in Ameristar’s system is the rough opening dimension, not the sash itself. Measure the visible glass width and height, then add roughly 1.5 inches to each dimension to back into the nominal size Ameristar used.

The aftermarket route makes sense when the frame is sound and only the sash or glass pack has failed. • The sash won’t stay open or slams shut unexpectedly. This points to a failed balance system, the internal coil or block-and-tackle mechanism that counterweights the sash. In Ameristar vinyl units from the 2000s, the balance shoe often cracks where it meets the track, and the sash becomes unpredictable, which is a finger hazard on heavier units.
• Visible moisture or fog between the glass panes. The insulating glass seal has failed, allowing moist Palo Alto air into the gap. Once the desiccant inside the spacer bar saturates, the fogging becomes permanent and the thermal performance of that unit is essentially gone.

• Cracking or chalking of the exterior vinyl frame. UV degradation has broken down the PVC cap stock. Palo Alto’s combination of strong sun and occasional salt air exposure accelerates this on south and west elevations.
