The Ameristar Permeable Series, Standard Concrete Pavers, and the thinner 1-inch overlay systems each use different edge restraints, bedding sand specs, and base depth requirements. Check the paver itself first: flip a loose unit and look for the stamped model code on the underside, usually a four-digit number followed by a color batch letter. If your installation dates to the 2012-2018 period common in Palo Alto’s Old Palo Alto and Professorville neighborhoods, you likely have the 60mm Standard Series, which is not interchangeable with the newer 80mm vehicular-grade product without resetting the entire base.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Sinking or dipping near the garage threshold. This usually means the aggregate base has compacted or washed out beneath the bedding sand, often from irrigation runoff hitting the same spot every morning. The pavers themselves are fine; the structure below them has failed.
• Weeds growing through the joints despite fresh polymeric sand. In Palo Alto’s dry summers, joint sand shrinks and creates channels for wind-blown seed. If this returns within a single season, the bedding layer is likely contaminated with native soil, which defeats the sand’s locking action.
• Chipped or spalled paver corners, especially on the driveway edge. Ameristar’s standard 60mm product is rated for residential vehicle loads, but repeated turning while stationary grinds the corners against the bedding sand. Edge restraints that have pulled away accelerate this by allowing lateral movement.
• Standing water more than 30 minutes after rain. Proper pitch on a paver driveway is 1/4 inch per foot toward the street or a drain. If water pools, the bedding layer has settled unevenly or the original base was insufficient for Palo Alto’s expansive clay soils.
• White efflorescence blooming across the surface. This salt deposit is cosmetic, not structural, but in Palo Alto it often signals moisture trapped beneath the pavers by a failing vapor barrier or poor drainage, which will eventually undermine the base.

There’s a honest line here. A homeowner can safely pull a few loose pavers, check the bedding sand depth (should be 1 inch of coarse concrete sand), and verify whether the edge restraint is still pinned. If the base below looks like compacted gravel, not mud or native soil, you might get away with a local reset.

Where DIY goes wrong: Palo Alto’s clay soil expands with winter rain and contracts dramatically in our dry season. Without proper base depth, usually 6-8 inches of compacted Class II aggregate for residential driveways, the repair fails in one weather cycle.
