Cover Windows & Doors: The Palo Alto Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Cover-compatible windows and doors across Palo Alto, with typical installed replacement costs running $4,500-$15,000 for window systems and $800-$3,000 for individual door component repairs depending on spec and access. Most Cover hardware, weatherseal, and operator parts are on our trucks or available next-day through our supplier network. Homeowners usually discover a problem when the window won’t stay open on its own, the door drags against the jamb after winter rains, or they feel a draft along the sill that wasn’t there in October.

Which Cover Models This Applies To

Cover manufactured windows and doors in several series through the 1990s and 2000s, most commonly the Cover 2000, Cover 3000, and the later Cover Pro lines. The label is usually found on the top edge of the sash or the hinge side of the door frame, stamped with a model prefix and a date code. The critical compatibility gotcha: Cover Pro operators from 2004-2008 used a 5/16-inch spindle diameter, while earlier 2000-series units used 3/8-inch. Order the wrong operator arm and the spline strips out in the first week.

We source OEM Cover parts when they’re still in distribution, which is increasingly limited for pre-2005 units. For those, we spec quality aftermarket equivalents from AmesburyTruth or Truth Hardware that match the original torque and travel specs. We also stock parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone product lines. Measure twice, write it down, then we talk.

Signs Your Cover Windows & Doors Is Failing

Signs Your Cover Windows & Doors Is Failing
  • Window sash drops or won’t stay open. The coil balance or constant-force spring has lost tension. In Palo Alto’s mild climate these typically last 12-15 years, but south-facing units with direct afternoon sun see premature fatigue from thermal cycling.
  • Door sticks or drags against the frame. The hinges have settled, the frame has shifted, or the weatherstrip has compressed beyond recovery. In the Barron Park and Old Palo Alto neighborhoods, we regularly see this after winter soil expansion pushes slab foundations slightly.
  • Visible moisture between double-pane glass. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed, allowing argon escape and condensation. Once you see fog, the low-E coating is already degrading and the thermal performance is gone.
  • Operator handle turns but sash doesn’t move. The gearbox inside the casement operator has stripped, usually from over-torquing a painted-shut window. The arm itself looks fine; the internal worm gear is the casualty.
  • Draft along the sill or jamb even when closed and locked. The compression weatherstrip has hardened or the interlock where the sash meets the frame has gapped. Palo Alto’s dry summers bake silicone bulbs to plastic; they stop rebounding by year 10.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Typical Range (Installed) What’s Included
Single window operator (casement/awning) $280-$520 OEM or matched aftermarket operator, removal of old unit, spindle lube, lock-point adjustment
Coil balance replacement (double-hung) $180-$340 per sash New balance shoe, pivot bar if worn, sash cord if applicable, travel test
Insulated glass unit (IGU) replacement $340-$680 per lite Custom-ordered IGU to exact size, desiccant-filled spacer, low-E match, installation with cap bead seal
Entry door slab replacement (prehung) $1,800-$4,200 Door unit, frame, hinges, lock bore, weatherstrip, trim adjustment, disposal
Full window replacement (vinyl/wood) $4,500-$15,000 Unit, flashing, insulation, interior/exterior trim, permit if required, final cleanup

What drives the range: unit size, floor level (third-story carries ladder time), stucco cutback versus siding, and whether the original frame is square. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, you get a written line-item price before we touch a tool. No change proceeds without a signed change order. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation; manufacturer defects are handled through the OEM warranty channel we document for you.

There’s a short list of what a Cover owner can safely check: verify the lock is fully engaging, clear debris from the sill track, and confirm the window isn’t painted shut at the meeting rail. Beyond that, the risks stack up. Casement operators store significant spring tension; releasing it without a winding tool can snap the arm into your hand or face. IGUs weigh 40-80 pounds depending on size, and the vacuum seal requires a heated press to fabricate properly. Homeowners who attempt their own IGU replacement usually end up with a temporary fix that leaks again in six months, plus a cracked lite from improper handling.
