Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Atlas changed its hinge boring pattern in 2006 from 3mm to 5mm, meaning replacement doors from post-2006 stock won’t mount cleanly to pre-2006 boxes without adapter plates. Signs Your Atlas Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

• Doors won’t stay closed or hang crooked. The original Atlas hinge cups wear oval after 10-15 years, especially on heavier wood-frame doors. The hinge itself looks fine, but the pressed-in cup loosens in the particleboard. We see this most on south-facing kitchens in Palo Alto where daily thermal expansion accelerates the wear.
• Drawer fronts tilt or drawers stick in the last inch of travel. The Grass or Blum glide carrier cracks where it meets the box sidewall. On Heritage-line kitchens, the particleboard sidewall itself delaminates, so the glide anchor pulls free. The fix is a new hardwood or plywood drawer box with upgraded undermount hardware.
• Thermofoil doors bubble or peel near the dishwasher, sink, or cooktop. Moisture vapor penetrates the PVC film where the edge banding has lifted. Palo Alto’s winter humidity spikes and summer irrigation overspray against exterior walls make this worse than inland climates. Once bubbling starts, the MDF core swells and the door is done; we replace with painted hardwood or a higher-grade thermofoil with PUR edge banding.
• Sink base floor is soft or discolored. Atlas Heritage lines used a ¼-inch hardboard sink base floor with a nominal moisture barrier. A slow drip from the P-trap or spray hose soaks through in months, not years. We replace with a ¾-inch marine-grade plywood floor and a proper pan system.
• Wall cabinets feel loose or pull away from the wall. The original installer likely used 2½-inch screws into studs; Atlas wall cabinets are heavier than they look, and the Peninsula’s clay soil creates enough seasonal foundation movement to work screws loose over time. We find stripped fasteners in maybe one in three Palo Alto Atlas kitchens we open up.
