Which Belgard Models This Applies To

Belgard’s roofing line is narrower than their paver catalog, which is what most Palo Alto homeowners know them for. The Belgard Roof-Loc interlocking shingle system and the Belgard Slate-Select synthetic slate are the two series we’ve serviced in this market. Both use proprietary fastening patterns and a specific 8-inch exposure dimension that standard Owens Corning or GAF shingles won’t match.

To identify your series, check the underside of any loose shingle for the Belgard stamp and a date code. The Roof-Loc series (discontinued around 2016) uses a fiberglass-reinforced asphalt core with a locking tab on the leading edge. Slate-Select uses a polymer composite with a different nail zone - 1.75 inches from the butt edge, versus 1.25 on most synthetics. We’ve seen homeowners in the Old Palo Alto neighborhood order standard synthetic slate nails and end up with blow-offs the next winter because the gauge was wrong for the Belgard spec. OEM fasteners run about 40 percent more than generic equivalents, but the head diameter and corrosion coating are matched to the material expansion rate. Signs Your Belgard Roofing Is Failing

• Granule loss in gutters. Belgard shingles use a ceramic-coated granule layer for UV protection. Heavy shedding means the asphalt core is baking. In Palo Alto’s sun exposure - particularly on south-facing slopes above 280 - we see this accelerate after year 12.
• Lifted or cupped shingle edges. The Roof-Loc locking tab relies on a mastic strip that hardens with heat cycles. Once it fails, the tab curls and wind drives rain underneath. We replaced a full slope in the Professorville area last spring where every tab on the west face had lifted.
• Water spots on ceiling drywall near ridgelines. Belgard ridge vents use a plastic baffle that cracks after roughly 8-10 years of Peninsula temperature swing. The crack is invisible from the ground, but attic inspection shows daylight through the split.
• Soft spots when walking the roof. This indicates underlayment failure, not shingle failure. Belgard’s recommended synthetic underlayment has a 25-year rating, but improper attic ventilation in Palo Alto’s older homes - especially the 1950s ranch stock - can halve that.
• Flashing separation at wall or chimney junctions. Belgard specifies a 4-inch head lap on step flashing, which is tighter than the 3-inch some crews default to. We’ve found this on three Palo Alto inspections this year; the fix is removing courses and reinstalling to spec.
