Bufftech Driveway & Pavers: The Palo Alto Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Bufftech-compatible driveway and paver components in Palo Alto, with replacement work typically running $5,000-$14,000 for a full driveway replacement and $250-$700 for sealing, depending on square footage and substrate condition. Most Bufftech paver repairs we quote can be scheduled within a few business days, and we carry common edge restraints, joint sand, and paver units on our trucks for the Peninsula market. Homeowners usually notice the problem first as shifting or sinking along the driveway edge, or weeds pushing through joints that used to stay tight - signs that the base, bedding layer, or edge restraint has failed.

Which Bufftech Models This Applies To

Bufftech’s paver line includes multiple series, and the part you need depends on which system was originally installed. The most common in Palo Alto are the modular concrete paver units used in permeable and standard applications, typically 60mm or 80mm thickness, with interlocking shapes that vary by series year. Check the edge of any loose paver for a stamped manufacturing date and series code, or measure the unit thickness and note the edge profile - dogbone, herringbone, or beveled.

We source OEM Bufftech replacements when the series is still in production, and when it is not, we match to vetted equivalents from Belgard or Techo-Bloc that meet or exceed the original compressive strength spec, usually 8,000 psi for residential driveways in this climate. The compatibility gotcha we see most often: early-2000s Bufftech permeable pavers with a 55mm thickness that current production no longer matches, requiring a full-section replacement rather than spot repair to maintain surface plane. For edging, Bufftech’s aluminum and PVC restraint systems are not cross-compatible - the stake spacing and profile dimensions differ, and mixing them causes the failure pattern to repeat within two seasons.

Signs Your Bufftech Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Bufftech Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Sinking or tilting pavers near the garage apron or street edge. This usually means the aggregate base has washed out or compacted unevenly, often from irrigation overspray or poor initial compaction. In Palo Alto’s clay-heavy soils, seasonal expansion accelerates the void formation.
  • Weeds or moss growing consistently between joints. The polymeric sand or joint stabilizer has degraded, which happens faster on south-facing driveways with full sun exposure. Once the binder breaks down, organic material fills the gap and retains moisture.
  • Chipped or spalled paver surfaces, especially at the driveway mouth. De-icing salts and the abrasion from studded tires or snow chains - rare here, but common on vehicles returning from Tahoe - exceed the surface hardness of standard residential-grade units.
  • Edge restraints pulling away from the paver field. The stakes have corroded or the restraint profile has cracked from UV exposure. Bufftech’s PVC restraints show this first as whitening and crazing before physical failure.
  • Standing water that previously drained properly. The bedding layer has migrated or the base slope has settled, reversing the pitch. In Barron Park and Old Palo Alto, we see this where mature tree roots have lifted the subgrade.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Bufftech driveway and paver work in Palo Alto, our installed pricing follows the ranges below. Every quote is a flat written price with line-item scope before work starts - no exceptions.

Service Price Range
Paver driveway installation (new) $7,000-$18,000
Concrete driveway installation $4,500-$12,000
Driveway replacement (remove and reinstall) $5,000-$14,000
Driveway sealing $250-$700
Paver patio installation $3,500-$11,000

What drives the range: square footage, access for excavation equipment, whether the existing base is salvageable, and paver unit selection. A 400-square-foot driveway with good base conditions and standard 60mm units sits at the lower end; the same footprint with 80mm permeable pavers, full base replacement, and tight access between structures moves toward the upper end. Our price includes removal and disposal of failed material, base preparation or replacement per geotechnical need, bedding layer, paver installation with cut work, joint sand or polymeric stabilization, edge restraint, and compaction. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, the price is written before anyone starts. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation, and we document the base condition and finished surface with a photo record you receive before we leave.

DIY or Call Us?

There is safe owner inspection and there is work that requires proper equipment and substrate knowledge. You can check: whether pavers are loose by hand, whether edge restraints move when pressed, and whether water drains or pools. You can also photograph any stamped series codes on paver edges for our reference.

Where DIY goes wrong: base compaction requires a plate compactor and moisture-controlled aggregate lifts, not hand tamping. Without proper subgrade prep, replacements settle again within one rainy season. Permeable installations need specific open-graded base stone and joint material - standard sand will clog the drainage voids. And excavating near utility laterals without locates risks service disruption. We pull permits when required by Palo Alto’s building division, and our crews are background-checked and uniformed.
