Cover’s fence line breaks into three series that matter for part matching: the Classic series (3-inch top rail, 1.5-inch square pickets, post brackets with two mounting holes), the Pro series (3.5-inch top rail, 2-inch pickets, three-hole brackets with a reinforced corner gusset), and the Estate series (4-inch top rail, decorative scallop profile, custom post caps that are not interchangeable with Classic or Pro). The model sticker is usually inside the gate frame on the hinge side, or on the underside of the bottom rail if the fence was installed after 2019.

We don’t source through Cover directly. Rowan Construction Group Palo Alto is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Cover. For Classic and Pro series, we use a quality aftermarket rail from a supplier in San Jose that matches the 0.055-inch wall thickness and the bracket spacing exactly. Estate series caps we often have to order, which adds three to five business days. The gotcha is the 2018-2020 Pro transition year: Cover changed bracket spacing from 6 inches to 5.5 inches, and the aftermarket rails cut to the old spec won’t seat. We measure every bracket center-to-center before ordering.

Signs Your Cover Fence Installation Is Failing

• Gates sag or drag. The gate frame has twisted or the post has tilted in loosened soil. In Palo Alto, the clay-heavy soil in neighborhoods like Old Palo Alto holds water longer than the sandy loam near the Bay, so posts heave more in winter and settle unevenly in dry summers.
• Rails pull out of posts. The bracket screws have stripped or the rail end has cracked from thermal expansion. Cover’s vinyl expands roughly 1/8 inch per 10 feet per 20 degrees Fahrenheit; without expansion gaps, the rail buckles and pops the bracket.
• Post caps crack or blow off. UV degradation makes the vinyl brittle after 8-12 years in Peninsula sun, and the internal locking tabs snap. We see this first on south-facing sections in Barron Park and Professorville, where afternoon exposure is harshest.
• Pickets warp or bow outward. The bottom rail has filled with water and the internal aluminum stiffener has corroded, removing the straight edge that holds pickets vertical. This is more common where sprinklers hit the fence daily.
• Concrete footings heave above grade. The post hole was dug too shallow or too narrow for the wind load. Palo Alto’s municipal code requires 24-inch minimum depth for 6-foot fences in open terrain; older installs often stopped at 18 inches.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground. A homeowner can check whether a sagging gate is hinge-bound (open it halfway and see if it hangs plumb) and whether post caps are merely loose or actually cracked. Tightening a hinge bolt with a socket wrench is reasonable. Digging out a 24-inch concrete footing, setting a new post plumb in expanding soil, and pouring concrete to grade while maintaining bracket alignment is not. The risk is a post that looks straight for two weeks, then tilts as the concrete cures and the clay shrinks.
