Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS produces driveway and paver systems in several series lines, and matching the right component matters more than most owners expect. The CWS Classic Series, CWS Permeable Series, and the older CWS Estate line each use different edge restraint profiles, joint sand specifications, and base-layer depths. You’ll find the series identifier stamped on the underside of loose pavers, or on the original project documentation if you have it. The Classic Series uses a 60mm paver thickness with a beveled edge; the Permeable Series runs 80mm with a spacer lug built into the side wall. The Estate line, common in Palo Alto installations from 2008-2015, used a proprietary edge restraint clip that CWS no longer manufactures, so we fabricate compatible replacements from aluminum or switch to a modern Techo-Bloc restraint system that integrates cleanly. For OEM versus aftermarket, we generally recommend CWS factory sand and sealant for color match, but we’ve had better long-term results with Versa-Lok or Belgard edge restraints on the Estate line because the original plastic becomes brittle in Peninsula sun exposure after eight to ten years.

Signs Your CWS Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Pavers shifting or rocking underfoot. This usually means the bedding sand layer has washed out or compacted unevenly, often because the joint sand above it failed first and let water channel underneath. In Palo Alto, the clay-heavy soils in neighborhoods like Old Palo Alto accelerate this when drainage is even slightly compromised.
• Edge restraints pulling away from the border. The plastic or metal strips that lock the outer course in place have lost their spike anchoring, typically from ground movement or rot in wooden edging that was used on older installs. Once the edge goes, the field pavers migrate outward within a few wet seasons.
• Water pooling in defined lines or low spots. This indicates base settlement or a failure in the subgrade compaction, not just surface irregularity. On CWS permeable installs, it can also mean the aggregate bedding layer is clogged with fine sediment from adjacent landscaping.
• Joint sand washing out repeatedly. If you’re sweeping in polymeric sand every spring and it’s gone by fall, the paver spacing has opened up or the sealant coat has degraded. CWS polymeric sand needs a clean, dry surface to activate; premature wetting during application is a common cause we see in DIY touch-ups.
• Surface spalling or color fading in patches. This is sealant failure, not paver failure, but it exposes the concrete substrate to moisture cycling. Palo Alto’s dry summers and wet winters create more thermal stress than CWS’s Arizona test climate accounts for, so we spec a higher-solids sealant on local jobs.

And never apply sealant over a damp surface or without testing for existing coat compatibility, because the resulting blush or delamination costs more to strip and redo than a proper first application.
