Which Kohler Models This Applies To

Kohler’s roofing product line, sold primarily through their Kohler Drainage Solutions and Kohler Signature Store channels, covers three hardware generations that matter for parts matching. The current Kohler K-RF series (2018-present) uses a standardized 4-inch flange with a snap-lock membrane collar; the transitional K-PF series (2012-2018) carries a 3.5-inch flange with threaded compression, and the pre-2012 Kohler-Pfister co-branded units use a proprietary 3.25-inch taper that requires an adapter plate for modern membrane compatibility.

Identification is straightforward if the label survived installation. Look for a stamped model prefix on the vent cap edge or inside the drain bowl: K-RF, K-PF, or KP-. If the label is gone, measure the flange outer diameter with a tape measure, not a ruler, and note whether the membrane collar threads on or snaps. We carry OEM Kohler gaskets and flanges for the K-RF and K-PF series, plus machined adapter plates for the KP- taper fit. Aftermarket equivalents from Oatey and Sioux Chief meet Kohler’s pressure spec and cost 30-40% less, but they void any remaining Kohler product warranty. For a 1980s Eichler with original Kohler-Pfister roof drains, the adapter plate plus aftermarket collar is usually the only practical path.

Signs Your Kohler Roofing Is Failing

• Water staining on ceiling drywall below vent or drain locations. The Kohler membrane collar has separated from the flange, often because the EPDM gasket has hardened in Palo Alto’s UV exposure. On south-facing slopes, we’ve seen gaskets go brittle in seven years.
• Visible gaps between the vent cap and roof deck. The K-RF snap-lock has popped from thermal cycling; the plastic locking tabs fatigue after roughly 500 expansion-contraction cycles, which in Palo Alto’s 40°F-90°F annual swing means six to ten years.

• Musty odor in attic space after rain. Slow seepage at the flange-to-deck seal, usually the butyl tape layer under a K-PF unit. The tape outgasses and loses adhesion in California’s low-humidity summers, then fails when winter rains arrive.
• Cracked or crazed vent cap plastic. UV degradation of the ABS cap, common on west-facing exposures in Palo Alto hills. The cap is cosmetic until it isn’t; once cracked, wind-driven rain enters the vent stack directly.
