The critical compatibility gotcha: Owens Corning vinyl rails from the 2012-2018 production run used a slightly narrower T-slot (0.875 inch vs. the current 1.0 inch). A standard aftermarket rail will slide in loose and rattle, or wedge and crack in temperature swings. Signs Your Owens Corning Fence Installation Is Failing

• Panels bow outward between posts. This usually means the bottom rail has lost its internal aluminum stiffener to corrosion, or the post footing has shifted in Palo Alto’s expansive clay soils. The panel itself may be sound, but the structural path is compromised.
• Bottom of pickets turn chalky white or green. This is UV degradation on the capstock layer, accelerated by the reflected heat from concrete or paver hardscaping common in Old Palo Alto and Professorville lots. Once the capstock is breached, moisture wicks into the substrate.
• Gate drags or won’t latch. The gate frame is a welded aluminum rectangle with a vinyl sleeve. Hinge screws back out of the soft aluminum over time, or the frame itself racks if the post it hangs from has tilted even 1/2 inch.
• Post caps crack or disappear. These are cosmetic until they are not - water enters the hollow post, freezes in our occasional January cold snaps, and splits the post from the inside out. We see this most on north-facing fence runs that never fully dry.
• Whole section leans after wind events. The post footing is the culprit. In Palo Alto, standard 24-inch-deep concrete footings often terminate in the expansive clay layer rather than penetrating below it. We set posts at 30-36 inches with a bell-bottom base to get below the active zone.
