Signs Your Schluter Installation Is Failing

• Tile tenting or popping sounds underfoot. DITRA is designed to absorb substrate movement, but if the thinset beneath the membrane was applied with a notched trowel held at too shallow an angle, the membrane never achieved full contact. We find this most often in Palo Alto Eichler slab-on-grade kitchens where the concrete was dusty or inadequately primed.
• Water staining on ceiling drywall below a second-floor kitchen or bath. KERDI seams that were hand-rolled rather than pressed with the Schluter KERDI-FIX roller leave micro-channels at the KERDI-BAND overlap. In the humid winter months along the Peninsula, these weep slowly enough that the damage shows downstairs before the tile looks wrong.
• Grout cracking in a straight line at the shower curb or kitchen sink base. This usually indicates the DITRA or KERDI membrane has delaminated from the substrate, allowing differential movement the grout cannot absorb. The membrane itself may be intact; the bond has failed.
• Localized floor warming in one corner of a DITRA-HEAT system. A single hot spot means the heating cable has overlapped on itself during installation, creating a resistance spike. This is a fire risk and the system should be shut off at the breaker until tested.
• Soft, spongy KERDI-BOARD at the dishwasher or refrigerator water line. The foam core wicks moisture if the waterproofing was punctured during appliance installation. We replaced a full KERDI-BOARD wall in a Palo Alto kitchen near Gunn High School where the refrigerator water filter housing had been screwed directly through the membrane without sealing.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely verify the Schluter system type by photographing the membrane color and any printed roll labels before calling. You can also check the DITRA-HEAT thermostat for error codes - E1 indicates a cable break, E2 a short - which tells us whether we’re replacing cable or tracing a connection fault.

Where DIY goes wrong: KERDI membrane seams must be overlapped 2″ minimum and rolled with proper pressure; hand pressure leaves voids that pass a visual check but fail under flood testing. DITRA-HEAT cable must never be cut or spliced; a damaged cable means new cable, new membrane, and new tile. The electrical load calculation for DITRA-HEAT requires matching total wattage to breaker capacity and GFCI protection - this is not a plug-and-play appliance installation.
