Where DIY goes wrong: bedding sand must be screeded perfectly flat - a 1/8-inch hump telegraphs through to the surface within weeks. Compaction requires a plate compactor with proper amplitude for the paver thickness; hand-tamping leaves voids that collect water and freeze-thaw in Palo Alto’s occasional cold snaps. And polymeric sand activation is timing-critical - too dry, it doesn’t set; too wet, it stains the surface permanently.
